What is a rare U.S. coin?
A rare U.S. coin is legal tender which was struck at one of our treasury mints such as Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco. The Carson City, Nevada Mint was officially closed in 1893. The striking of coins are all authorized by acts of Congress. The key factors which determine rarity are scarcity and condition. Simply put, rare coins are those which are not available in large quantities and require minimal increases in demand to drive prices up. Rare coins have a history of high appreciation due to the basic fundamentals of supply and demand.
