the Seated Liberty Dime

The Seated Liberty Dime made its debut in 1837.  Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 1837 and 1838 coins were struck without stars on the obverse giving the coin a cameo effect.  From mid 1838-1860, stars were added to the obverse giving the coin a more appealing look.  To signify a reduction in weight, arrows were added to some dimes from 1853 and all issues from 1854 and 1855.

During 1860, the reverse of the dime was modified with a new wreath and transferring the motto United States of America to the obverse.  Arrows were again added to the coin in 1873 and 1874, this time to signify an increase in weight.  After 35 years of production, the Seated Dime was replaced by the Barber Dime in 1892.
