The Seated Liberty Half Dollar was minuted from 1839-1891. There were several varieties within this series. 1839 was the only date in which there was no drapery from the elbow. From 1839 (revised) until 1842 the drapery from elbow is present, however, the legend appears in small letters. From 1842-1853 the legend appears in large letters. However, all of these are still contained in Variety 1 which is distinguished by no motto above the eagle. The motto appeared in 1866 which is around the eagle (1853 only). In 1854, there were no rays but the arrows still appeared at date until 1855. From 1856 to 1866 the Variety 1 design resumed. Variety 4 was struck from 1866 to 1873 and then Variety 5 appeared in 1873 until 1874-arrows at date. From 1875 until the end of the series (1891) Variety 4 resumed.
Christian Gobrecht designed this attractive coin which is extremely desirable in MS65 proof or better quality. We highly recommend these halves as they are scarce and have a tremendous track record.
