the Trade Dollar

During the late 1860's and 1870's, a great international trade developed with the Orient. Not wanting paper money, Chinese merchants preferred silver. In 1873, a special, heavier silver piece called the "Trade Dollar" was minted. At first, they were legal tender in the United States. However, because of the difference in weight to the regular dollar, confusion results and the pieces were authorized and made for export only.
